Link: A new ‘ultra-secure’ phone carrier says it can make you harder to track
A new cell phone carrier named Cape is launching with a promise to offer secure mobile services to high-risk individuals like journalists and activists. The company, leveraging its status as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), uses UScellular’s network while controlling its own mobile core.
Cape is focused on minimizing the amount of personal information collected from users and shortening the duration for which it's stored.
Their service includes a special Android phone equipped with privacy features such as hidden device identifiers and the ability to rotate mobile advertising IDs.
Additionally, Cape has implemented protective measures against security threats such as SIM swapping and SS7 attacks, which aim to intercept communication.
Their approach hinges on the principle: "We can’t leak or sell data that we don’t have," ensuring robust protection through modern cryptography and secure protocols.
Although it's too early to establish the effectiveness of Cape’s offerings, the service is designed to be appealing given the constant concerns of data breaches and privacy infringements.
Originally available to government officials, it’s now accessible to other high-risk users and plans to expand to a broader audience next year. #
