Link: A tiny satellite showed it can take high-res pics from space
The Tokyo-based startup ArkEdge Space recently shared 2.5-meter resolution aerial-quality images of Earth, captured by their small CubeSat, ONGLAISAT. These high-definition images notably include detailed views of urban and rural areas near Seattle and Patagonia.
The company's breakthrough hinges on incorporating advanced technology into a compact 6U CubeSat, which is roughly the size of a suitcase. It features sophisticated components like a TASA-developed Korsch off-axis optical system and a CMOS TDI sensor.
These images, taken from 410 kilometers above Earth, are considered among the highest ground resolutions achieved by CubeSats. ArkEdge Space asserts it offers unparalleled clarity in its category.
ONGALAISAT's mission, launched in cooperation with Taiwan's space agency TASA and the University of Tokyo, primarily aimed to test these cutting-edge optical and imaging systems in orbit.
According to Reuters, this mission will conclude in March, after which the satellite's innovative optical technology will be integrated into future missions. ArkEdge CEO Takayoshi Fukuyo described the image quality as comparable to direct aerial photographs.
Initially delivered to the ISS in November, ONGLAISAT was deployed the following month, demonstrating successful operation and image processing capabilities. #
