Link: AI Is Coming for India’s Famous Tech Hub - WSJ

Artificial intelligence is transforming India's $250 billion technology outsourcing industry, potentially eliminating many jobs. Companies are leveraging AI to streamline operations, particularly in routine tasks such as call center duties.

"Generative AI will quickly replace basic contact center services," states Keshav Murugesh, CEO of WNS. This shift emphasizes the need for India's outsourcing firms to innovate or risk losing business to automation.

AI's influence extends globally but has significant implications for India, where outsourcing contributes 8% to the national economy and employs millions. Over 80% of S&P 500 companies outsource to India, highlighting the scale of potential job displacement.

Job roles are evolving, with a current trend towards less labor-intensive operations in the industry. "Companies previously needing 27 employees to generate $1 million now require only 21," according to Nasscom data.

Vin Kumar of Hackett Group warns that U.S. companies may resort to in-house operations if Indian firms fail to integrate automation effectively. This could lead to a substantial reduction in outsourcing.

Despite these challenges, industry leaders remain optimistic about AI fostering new business avenues even as it impacts existing ones. Advanced skills like critical thinking and creative problem-solving are now more crucial than ever. #
