Link: Amazon starts drone deliveries in Arizona
Amazon has initiated drone delivery operations at its Tolleson, AZ, location, marking a significant advancement in its delivery services. This site is set up for same-day deliveries and will serve customers in the West Valley Phoenix Metro Area.
Eligible customers can now receive packages via Amazon's Prime Air, accessing over 50,000 products ranging from household items to office tech. This selection is Amazon’s largest yet for quick drone deliveries.
The Tolleson facility integrates drone operations directly with Amazon's delivery network, utilizing the latest MK30 drones capable of carrying up to 5 pounds. These drones can fly farther and operate quieter, meeting new safety standards.
Amazon has secured FAA approval to operate these drones Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), allowing flights beyond the operator’s visual range. The approval makes Amazon the first to launch a facility with BVLOS drone services compliant with FAA regulations.
Despite early challenges and delays, Amazon has successfully delivered thousands of items within an hour since beginning its drone services in 2022. The company is operational in College Station, Texas and aims to expand to new sites by 2025.
These developments suggest a promising future for Amazon's drone delivery program, enhancing efficiency in e-commerce logistics. The closure of its Lockeford, California site has shifted focus to more technologically advanced and integrated facilities like Tolleson. #
