Link: College students used Meta’s smart glasses to dox people in real time

Two Harvard students have demonstrated how smart glasses can reveal personal details about anyone instantly using current technology. They utilized Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and public databases in their demo.

The tech, named I-XRAY, streams video to Instagram where an AI identifies faces and searches public records for personal information. It can uncover names, addresses, and even family connections in real-time.

Demonstrating its capability, students AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio used I-XRAY on classmates and strangers, pretending to know them by leveraging the gathered data. This highlights the tech's potential for misuse in everyday interactions.

The students aim to show that such technology isn't futuristic but achievable with current tools, raising awareness about the potential risks. They stress that they built I-XRAY not for misuse but as a demonstration.

Despite privacy warnings, smart glasses like those used in the demo are discreet, complicating the public's ability to notice their use in public spaces. These devices could challenge existing notions of privacy and consent.

Meta advises users of smart glasses to respect privacy and engage in ethical recording practices. However, the effectiveness of such advisories remains questionable as people may not adhere to these guidelines. #
