Link: Comcast is rolling out ‘ultra-low lag’ tech that could fix the internet

If you use Comcast Xfinity, your FaceTime and gaming experiences may soon improve. Comcast is implementing a new upgrade focused on reducing latency rather than simply increasing bandwidth.

This technology, known as L4S (Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable Throughput), aims to make activities like video calls and online gaming smoother by minimizing delays.

L4S works by enabling internet packets to detect congestion in their path, allowing devices to adjust and potentially eliminate waiting times.

The enhancement will first improve applications like FaceTime, Nvidia’s GeForce Now, and several games on Steam, as well as apps on Meta’s mixed reality headsets. Apple, Nvidia, and Valve collaborated with Comcast, which has built L4S support into its recent devices.

Comcast plans to extend this low-latency technology to additional content and applications providers who opt to use the new open standard.

According to a Comcast spokesperson, trial phases of the technology saw a 78% reduction in latency, promising substantial performance improvements for users.
