Link: Data brokers can keep selling your social security number, says new CFPB chief

Scott Bessent, recently appointed as Acting Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), has halted all agency operations. According to Bloomberg Law, Bessent's directive includes stopping rulemaking, communications, and litigation.

This sweeping halt affects various CFPB activities, including the enforcement of existing rules and the investigation of companies. The order also bars any public communications from the agency.

As a result, a crucial pending rule prohibiting data brokers from selling sensitive personal data, such as Social Security numbers, is now at risk. This rule was set to be implemented on March 3rd.

Bessent's actions come amid broader scrutiny. He's facing questions from Senator Elizabeth Warren over his decision to allow Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency access to the US federal payment system.

Despite the controversies, Bessent has expressed his commitment to advancing President Trump's agenda, aiming to reduce costs and boost economic growth for Americans.
