Link: Decentralized Instagram alternative Pixelfed launches mobile apps | TechCrunch

Pixelfed, a decentralized alternative to Instagram, has officially launched its mobile apps. This service leverages the ActivityPub protocol which also powers other decentralized platforms like Mastodon and PeerTube.

Developed in 2018 by Daniel Supernault, Pixelfed functions similar to Instagram by allowing photo and video sharing, but stands out by being ad-free and decentralized.

As public sentiment shifts away from giants like Meta, especially if TikTok remains banned, Pixelfed's position in the market is strengthening. Its emphasis on privacy and chronological feeds enhances its appeal.

To begin using Pixelfed, users can join an existing server or host their own, similar to other federated apps.

After initially being available via web and third-party apps, Pixelfed now offers its own dedicated apps for Android and iOS, which quickly saw significant uptake following their release.

Supernault shared on Mastodon that the Android app was downloaded 10,000 times in just two days and that Pixelfed.social attracted 11,000 new users and received over 78,000 posts in a single day. #
