Link: FCC is offering $200 million to protect schools and libraries from hackers

The Federal Communications Commission is allocating $200 million to bolster cybersecurity in schools and libraries. This funding is part of the Schools and Libraries Cybersecurity Pilot Program, aimed at determining the potential for ongoing support.

The money will come from the Universal Service Fund (USF), contributed by telecommunications companies. This initiative will determine the effectiveness of investing in cybersecurity on a regular basis.

Schools and libraries engaged in this pilot can claim costs for essential security enhancements. These include advanced firewalls, identity protection, malware defense, and VPN services.

Eligibility for the pilot is limited to entities that qualify for the FCC’s E-rate program, which facilitates affordable internet access to them. This will ensure that the benefits of the program reach those already receiving federal internet aid.

The FCC plans to launch the application process this fall, aiming for a diverse selection of schools in terms of size and geographic location. Priority will be given to low-income and Tribal applicants in an effort to focus resources where they are most needed.

Given the sharp increase in cyber attacks on educational institutions, as reported by K12 Security Information eXchange, this funding is a critical step toward safeguarding educational infrastructure. #
