Link: Google announces Android XR, a new OS for headsets and smart glasses

Google has unveiled Android XR, a new OS for 'extended reality' devices, partnering with Samsung and others to usher in a new era of wearable technology. The platform will support a variety of apps, including immersive versions of Maps, Photos, and YouTube, and will facilitate multiwindow browsing in Chrome.

Google's long struggle with wearable devices like Glass and Cardboard may finally see success through the integration of its Gemini AI, emphasizing the potential of a digital assistant within XR wearables. "We believe a digital assistant integrated with your XR experience is the killer app for the form factor," stated Sameer Samat of Google.

The term 'XR' or extended reality encompasses a broad range of experiences, from virtual to augmented realities, aiming to cover the entire spectrum. Google's vision includes headsets that transition between virtual and real worlds, and even audio-only devices.

While Android XR is still in developmental stages, Google plans rapid progress, with a collaborative device built with Samsung expected to ship next year. This venture reflects Google's broader bets on AI, the Android ecosystem, and wearable tech.

In its bid to support a wide range of devices, Google's strategy spans from standalone units to phone accessories. The outcome of this extensive support network, spearheaded by Android XR, remains to be seen as developers begin to build on this new platform.
