Link: Google’s ‘Ask for Me’ uses AI to call local businesses for you
Google has introduced a new AI tool called "Ask for Me" that automates the process of making inquiries to businesses for users. Currently, the service is limited to queries about nail salons and auto shops.
Once enabled through Google Search Labs, users can activate the tool when searching for local services, prompting Google's AI to handle calls and gather information.
The AI asks specific questions based on the user's needs, such as the type of car service required and preferred timing, and users must provide a contact method for updates.
“Ask for Me” uses Duplex technology to ensure that calls are clearly announced as automated, initiated by Google on the user’s behalf, explained Google's product lead Rose Yao.
Businesses have the option to opt out from receiving these calls through their Google Business Profile, and Google maintains restrictions on the number of calls to prevent overwhelming businesses.
Some confusion may arise as businesses adjust to receiving inquiries from an AI, similar to initial reactions to Google's Duplex system. #
