Link: Google’s mobile search results are dropping the ‘breadcrumbs’ from URLs

Google is modifying how URLs are displayed in mobile search results, simplifying them to show only the domain name. This change is a shift from the previous format that included "breadcrumbs," highlighting the webpage's hierarchical structure.

Since 2009, mobile users have seen breadcrumbs after the domain name, but Google notes that these often get truncated on smaller screens. This was particularly noticeable on devices like the iPhone 13 Mini.

While mobile searches will now primarily show just the domain, desktop searches will continue to display full URL paths. This differentiation acknowledges the varying screen sizes and user experiences across devices.

Google's structured data guidelines, which dictate how URLs and other information appear, still allow some control for web developers. However, the new mobile display format is less detailed regardless of screen size.

The change, effective from today, reflects Google's adaptation to the practical viewing limitations on mobile devices. Even larger mobile screens, which could display more of the URL, will see this simplified format.

This decision may impact how users perceive site navigation on mobile, though it aims to enhance readability and ease of use. #
