Link: Google’s new chess game lets you customize pieces with AI

Google has unveiled a unique chess website featuring AI-generated custom pieces. Users can input descriptions to create themed sets for the white pieces, while the AI concocts complementary sets for the black side.

The site offers basic gameplay with three difficulty levels and two time controls. However, it lacks features like move review and tracking captured pieces.

Its default isometric view can be swapped for a traditional top-down perspective in the settings. This change helps mitigate the initial disorienting effect of the board layout.

Released during the 2024 World Chess Championship, Google leveraged its sponsorship of the event to introduce this innovative platform. The intent seems to line up with promoting new chess-related products.

Google also announced a chess bot set to integrate with its Gemini platform. This bot will enable users to play chess by typing moves, displaying an update of the board with each input.

Available from December for Gemini Advanced subscribers, the feature's effectiveness remains to be seen, given the current limitations of Gemini's image-based chess analysis.#
