Link: Hollywood's Divide on Artificial Intelligence Is Only Growing

Hollywood is increasingly divided on the issue of Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage in the film industry. This conflict emerged in 2022, largely catalyzed by the release of ChatGPT by OpenAI, and a song that utilized AI renditions of Drake and the Weeknd's voices.

Consequently, various artists and unions are moving towards courts and lobbying in Washington D.C. to establish AI guardrails, limiting unauthorized and unpaid use of appearances and voices in generative AI tools.

In contrast, studios have remained neutral, waiting to see the fallout of this bill. Most studios predominantly support legislation as long as it doesn’t infringe on their rights to use AI-generated digital replicas in parodies and documentaries.

However, filmmakers are also divided on the use of AI tools. Some disapprove, believing it undermines filmmaking's integrity, while others view it as an asset not being completely reliant on it.

SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America (WGA) stand against the studios, calling upon the Copyright Office to recommend that lawmakers require companies to get permission from copyright owners before training their tech on copyrighted material.

Despite these debates over AI's role, the technology continues to advance and integrate into the film production process. The entertainment industry now awaits the Copyright Office's next report within the year, which will further impact the industry's direction concerning AI. #
