Link: How the FBI and Mandiant caught hacker Jesse Kipf, who sold access to systems he broke into and hacked Hawaii's death registration system to fake his own death (Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai/TechCrunch)

In January 2023, Jesse Kipf used a stolen doctor's credentials to file a fake death certificate in Hawaii's death registration system, claiming he died of COVID-19.

This false information quickly appeared in government databases and Kipf, posing as a hacker named "FreeRadical," tried to sell system access on a hacking forum.

A cybercrime team at Mandiant, led by Austin Larsen, detected the fraudulent activity by analyzing a partial screenshot posted by "FreeRadical."

They traced the hack back to Kipf, leading to a federal investigation which uncovered that Kipf had faked his own death to evade child support payments.

Further investigation revealed Kipf's extensive cybercrimes across multiple states and his plans to escape financial responsibilities by faking his identity.

Kipf was apprehended, confessed, and was sentenced to nearly seven years in prison for his offenses, which included identity theft and hacking government systems. #
