Link: iRobot’s founder is working on a new kind of home robot

Colin Angle, co-founder and former CEO of iRobot, has launched a new robotics startup, Familiar Machines & Magic, focusing on health and wellness robots. This venture, still in stealth mode, has teamed up with ex-iRobot CTO Chris Jones and Ira Renfrew, previously at Amazon.

Before his departure, Angle aimed to transform iRobot into a central hub for smart homes. However, after a failed sale to Amazon, iRobot cut back significantly on research and staffing, concentrating on cleaning devices.

Familiar Machines & Magic has secured $15 million in funding and is seeking an additional $15 million to develop their "familiar" robot concept. The startup positions itself as a pioneer in embodied AI and robotics, headquartered outside Boston.

Angle's shift from utilitarian robots like Roomba to more personal, companion robots represents a substantial change in focus. Historically, practical robots have seen more success compared to companion bots, which often struggle in the market.

However, with advances in generative AI, there is renewed potential for robots that offer more personal interactions and assistance. Companies like Intuition Robotics are enhancing robot capabilities to be more engaging and interactive, particularly for the elderly.

The precise nature of Angle's new robot remains under wraps, but it aims to blend appealing design with functional benefits for household members. This balance could address both loneliness and everyday practical needs in innovative ways. #
