Link: Japan, China, South Korea set 40 million tourist target

Tourism ministers from Japan, China, and South Korea aim to boost annual tourist exchanges to 40 million by 2030, which is 10 million more than pre-pandemic figures. This goal was set during a meeting in Kobe, marking the ministers' first reunion since 2019.

During the 10th meeting of the tourism ministers, strategies were agreed upon to manage the challenges of overtourism. The meeting included key figures such as Japan's Tetsuo Saito and South Korea's Yu In-chon.

The ministers issued a joint statement that highlighted the necessity of sharing data on travel destinations and consumption rates. They are looking to enhance travel convenience by increasing direct flights to drive tourist numbers.

Recent records from the Japan National Tourism Organization show a surge in visitors to Japan, with 3.29 million in July alone, nearly half from China and South Korea. However, Japanese overseas travel remains at about 60% of what it was before the pandemic.

Despite the current disparity in travel patterns, these efforts signify a robust commitment to revitalizing regional tourism and adapting post-COVID. The next meeting is scheduled for 2025 in China. #
