Link: Japanese government suspends plan to pay Tokyo women 600,000 to move away to get marries

The relocation marriage grant in Japan is undergoing reevaluation. A few days ago, it was revealed that the Japanese government planned to offer women in Tokyo 600,000 yen (about US$4,000) to relocate to less populated areas and get married.

This initiative was part of broader efforts to revitalize regions facing population decline. The proposal aimed to be included in the 2025 fiscal budget, but it has now been withdrawn.

Public reaction to the plan was tepid, prompting Minister Hanako Jimi to call for a reevaluation, citing concerns about gender bias and economic implications.

Critics argue that offering the grant only to women is unfair and could economically disadvantage them, especially in areas with limited job opportunities.

It remains uncertain whether the grant will return in a revised form, but it’s clear it won’t be implemented in 2025. #
