Link: Japanese Language Education Committee (JLEC)

The JLEC report highlights critical recommendations for revitalizing Japanese-language education in the United States. Despite an increase in learners, the number of teachers has declined, which raises concerns for the future of Japanese-language programs.

JLEC proposed 15 specific recommendations focused on teacher training, educational materials, infrastructure, and community needs. A key suggestion includes leveraging alumni from the JET Programme to address the shortage of Japanese-language teachers.

The CULCON Panels emphasized the importance of increasing the number of Japanese-language teachers, particularly those from Japan, to meet the growing demand. They encouraged organizations like AATJ and the Japan Foundation to collaborate in achieving these goals.

The JLEC report and its recommendations were presented at the CULCON XXVIII meeting. The Panels agreed to monitor the progress of Japanese-language education in the US as part of the ongoing ERC efforts.

JLEC was established in 2015 to assess and enhance Japanese-language education in the US. The committee has been actively engaging with educational institutions, Japanese companies, and community leaders to address the challenges.

With its work concluded, JLEC's responsibilities have been transitioned to the Education Review Committee, which will continue to follow up on these initiatives through 2020.
