Link: Japanese-made AI Buddha to make debut in Bhutan
An AI-based chatbot called Buddhabot, developed by Kyoto University and a startup, will start offering insights from a Buddhist perspective in English in Bhutan.
Originally created in 2021, the chatbot utilized the oldest discourses of Buddha, with more classic texts integrated later.
In 2023, the system was enhanced into Buddhabot Plus using OpenAI's ChatGPT technology, capable of adding detailed interpretations to the Buddhist teachings.
The introduction of an English version of Buddhabot Plus was in response to the Bhutanese government's request, with trials involving 100 to 200 monks to refine it further.
By March 2027, all monks in Bhutan may use the technology, and considerations for broader public access are underway, particularly to engage the younger, English-speaking population.
Professor Seiji Kumagai noted the potential for broad applications, including in Japan, where interest in traditional temple teachings is waning. #
