Link: Japanese youth's mental well-being a concern as many report low satisfaction levels - The Mainichi

UNICEF's 2020 report indicates that despite ranking first for physical health, Japanese children suffer from poor mental well-being, ranking 37th out of 38 countries.

About 40% surveyed youths report low satisfaction with life, contributing to high suicide rates amongst these individuals.

A 21-year-old university student, who has lived a life curated entirely by his parents, reflects on the strain of excessive parental control on his happiness.

Despite having a limited social life, facing constant pressure to perform academically, and restricted freedom, this student feels obligated to follow his parents' designed future for him.

Additionally, there is also the continued societal pressure to conform, further suppressing individuality and expression.

Compared to Dutch children where 90% rank their life satisfaction at 6 or above, only 62% of Japanese children report the same level of satisfaction, contributing to the alarming rates of school absences in the 2020 academic year.
