Link: LinkedIn says it has verified 55M+ users for free, the most verified individual human identities of any social network, to combat AI-fueled misinformation (Salvador Rodriguez/CNBC)
LinkedIn has verified over 55 million users for free to fight the spread of misinformation amid the rise of AI. This strategy contrasts with other social media platforms that charge for verification.
The verification initiative began after platforms like Meta introduced paid verification services like Meta Verified. LinkedIn plans to extend free verification to 100 million users by 2025.
LinkedIn is employing a two-fold verification process: checking identities via corporate emails and government IDs partnered with services like Clear and Persona. "We want to make it broadly accessible and build a trusted community," said Oscar Rodriguez of LinkedIn.
Despite its efforts, only a small fraction of LinkedIn's billion members are currently verified. The platform has removed 99% of fake accounts before they reach other users.
Since AI technology makes creating fake digital identities easier, LinkedIn's verification also focuses on checking the authenticity of job listings and company pages.
Users are encouraged to get verified as it significantly enhances profile visibility and engagement. LinkedIn assures a strict verification standard to maintain a high trust level among its user base. #
