Link: Mercedes dials up the speed of its hands-free, eyes-off Drive Pilot feature

Mercedes-Benz's Drive Pilot, a Level 3 'conditionally automated driving' system, now supports speeds up to 95km/h on German motorways. This enhancement marks Mercedes' confidence in its advanced autonomous technology.

The automaker is awaiting German regulatory approval before issuing a software update to enable this feature in compatible vehicles. Once approved, Mercedes will offer the world's fastest Level 3 system in a series-production car.

Drive Pilot permits drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel and their foot off the pedal under specific conditions. It’s allowed in California and Nevada and lets drivers redirect their attention away from the road during certain situations.

Originally marketed as a solution for managing stop-and-go traffic by taking over driving tasks, Drive Pilot now aims to enhance convenience during road trips. Mercedes envisions this technology as a precursor to fully autonomous driving.

Despite the expanding capabilities of autonomous systems, concerns persist about driver re-engagement during emergencies. Studies suggest that sudden transitions from automated to manual control can lead to overreactions and potential accidents.

While most fully autonomous firms focus on Level 4 technologies that eliminate the need for a driver, Mercedes is progressing cautiously with its Level 3 ambitions. This includes a plan to indicate active Drive Pilot usage via distinctive turquoise lighting on the vehicle’s exterior. #
