Link: Microsoft is discontinuing its HoloLens headsets

Microsoft has ceased production of its HoloLens 2 headsets and there are no plans for a new version. Although production has stopped, they will continue to provide critical security updates until 2027.

Software support for the original HoloLens will terminate on December 10th. The original device was launched in 2015, with HoloLens 2 following in 2019, boasting improved features.

Microsoft has faced several challenges with the HoloLens project recently. After misconduct allegations, HoloLens head Alex Kipman left in 2022, and subsequent layoffs have affected the hardware teams.

Despite cancelling plans for HoloLens 3, Microsoft hinted at a possible future update for the hardware. However, no clear timeline has been provided for this update.

Currently, Microsoft is collaborating with Anduril Industries to enhance US Army's IVAS headsets, which are based on HoloLens technology. This partnership aims to integrate advanced sensors into these military-grade mixed-reality headsets.

The IVAS project, slated to run for ten years, represents a significant investment by the US Army, potentially reaching $21.9 billion. Further testing of these headsets is expected in early 2025. #
