Link: Microsoft’s Xbox AI era starts with a model that can generate gameplay

Microsoft has unveiled its innovative Muse AI model, designed to assist Xbox developers in creating dynamic game environments and enhancing classic games for modern platforms. The AI can generate game settings based on player actions or visual inputs, a technology developed in collaboration with Ninja Theory.

Muse was trained using a massive dataset from the Xbox game Bleeding Edge, equating to seven years of human gameplay. This partnership between Microsoft Research and Ninja Theory was integral in developing the model.

Although still in the early stages, the Muse model showcases Microsoft's progress by generating gameplay visuals at a resolution of 300x180 pixels. It represents a significant stride from previous 128x128 resolutions in AI-driven gaming models.

In addition to game development, Muse is being considered for game preservation, making older games accessible on new hardware without their original engines. During a demo, Muse responded in real-time, hinting at future possibilities for interactive AI-powered gaming.

Microsoft emphasizes that the Muse AI aims to augment, not replace, human creativity in gaming. The company is exploring its potential for rapid prototyping and adding AI elements to existing games.

Despite the advancements, Microsoft maintains that the application of AI in game creation will respect the artistic vision of each Xbox studio, ensuring that technology supports rather than dictates the creative process. #
