Link: Nintendo Japan plans to stop repairing its Classic Edition consoles
Nintendo's NES Classic Edition and Super Nintendo Classic Edition are nearing eight and seven years old, respectively. The Japanese versions will no longer receive repairs once existing part supplies deplete.
While Nintendo Japan won't immediately halt repairs, they’ve cautioned that the ability to service these consoles could end without much notice. This policy follows a similar approach taken with the Wii U, indicating a possible shorter support span for the Classic consoles.
Despite their popularity, Nintendo's Classic Edition consoles had limited productions compared to other products like the Wii U, which sold 13 million units. The scarce availability of parts might curtail the repair window significantly.
The Classic Editions are mini replicas of the NES and SNES, offering retro games via software emulation. They spurred the release of competing retro mini consoles like the Sega Genesis Mini.
In the U.S., Nintendo has not announced an end to the repair services for these consoles. We are still awaiting confirmation from Nintendo and will update accordingly.
Their discontinuation of repairs signals the winding down of support for these beloved retro consoles. The impact on fans who cherish these systems remains to be seen. #
