Link: On Sega’s new pagers, kids communicate solely in emojis

Sega is reinventing the pager with Emojam, a WiFi-enabled emoji-only messenger for kids. Set for a December 2024 release, it encourages users to communicate using just emojis from a selection of over 1,100 unique icons.

Emojam incorporates an Emoji Lab where kids can create new emojis by combining existing ones. The device supports up to ten emojis per message and facilitates both one-on-one and group chats with up to five friends.

To enhance safety, Emojam requires physical device contact to add friends, safeguarding against unwanted contacts from strangers. This feature significantly lowers the risk of children being exposed to harmful interactions.

By offering a text-free communication method, Emojam aims to shield children from the negative impacts of regular social media. Priced at approximately USD 45, its success in Japan could lead to a global launch.

A significant portion of parents regret giving smartphones to their children, showing a move towards simpler devices. Emojam meets this need by stripping back to basic and safer communication methods.

Sega's initiative not only keeps children connected with their peers but also taps into their innate understanding and love for emojis, offering a creative and engaging way to chat.< #
