Link: Opensignal ranks Japan #1 in G7 mobile reliability experience between July 1 and September 28, followed by France, Germany, the US, Canada, Italy, and the UK (Yasemin Craggs Mersinoglu/Financial Times)
Mobile users in the UK experienced the least reliable service among G7 countries in 2024, according to Opensignal. This poor performance largely stems from low investment and the government's ban on Huawei equipment, disrupting network upgrades.
Britain scored only 859 out of a possible 1,000 points for mobile reliability, placing it last in the G7. Italy scored slightly better with 861 points, while Japan led with 925 points.
Experts like Kester Mann from CCS Insight and Sam Fenwick from Opensignal attribute this unreliability to inadequate industry investment and issues in swapping out Huawei infrastructure. Additionally, struggles with obtaining planning permissions for telecom towers exacerbated the problem.
Differences in mobile experience were also evident regionally within the UK, with Yorkshire and Humber providing the most reliable service. In contrast, Wales reported the poorest outcomes.
Mobile UK emphasized the commitment of network operators to invest in modern 5G networks. The association stressed the need for supportive government policies to enhance infrastructure and regulatory environments.
The UK government has set ambitious goals to achieve comprehensive gigabit and standalone 5G coverage by 2030. This includes streamlining planning processes and protecting networks from external threats.
