Link: Procreate’s anti-AI pledge attracts praise from digital creatives

Procreate has taken a firm stand against generative AI, assuring its users that it won’t be integrated into their products. CEO James Cuda expressed concern over the technology's impact on artists, stating, “I don’t like what’s happening to the industry, and I don’t like what it’s doing to artists.”

The creative community’s concerns with generative AI revolve around unauthorized use of their content and potential job losses. Some digital illustrators are now seeking alternatives to apps that include generative AI, such as Adobe Photoshop.

Procreate echoed these sentiments, calling generative AI a technology “ripping the humanity out of things” and steering us toward “a barren future.” While recognizing the merits of machine learning, the company believes the current path of generative AI is not right for them.

This announcement has been met with widespread praise from creatives discontent with how other companies have embraced AI. Rival apps like Clip Studio Paint have already scrapped plans for AI features following user backlash.

Even Adobe, despite attempts at ethical AI development, has faced criticism for its perceived abandonment of independent artists. Procreate’s clear stance and refusal to adopt AI have only strengthened its positive reputation among creatives.

With its commitment to a one-time purchase model and expansion into new areas, Procreate continues to be well-received. As Cuda said, “We believe that we’re on the right path to supporting human creativity.” #
