Link: Sony Japan ends production of recordable Blu-rays with ‘no successor’ planned
Sony is officially ending production of recordable Blu-rays, affecting blank discs used in PCs and DVRs. This decision was announced alongside the cessation of MiniDiscs, MD-Data, and MiniDV cassettes production.
The discontinuation of these recordable formats does not impact pre-recorded Blu-rays containing movies or TV shows. Sony had previously indicated a move away from recordable optical media.
Sony has been a pioneer in Blu-ray technology, demonstrating the first prototypes in 2000 and releasing recorders by 2006. Other major manufacturers like LG, Samsung, and Oppo are also withdrawing from the Blu-ray market.
The decision also affects MiniDiscs, a format Sony introduced in 1992 as a robust alternative to cassettes and CDs. Fans of MiniDiscs may find it increasingly difficult to procure blank media for personal recording.
Despite the end of production, current users can still use smartphones to load music onto existing MiniDiscs. Overall, the landscape of physical media continues to evolve with technological advancements and changing consumer preferences.
