Link: Starlink’s direct-to-cell satellite service is the first to receive FCC approval
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved SpaceX to use Starlink satellites for direct-to-phone services for T-Mobile customers. This marks the first sanctioned partnership between a satellite operator and a wireless carrier.
The FCC highlighted the public benefits of satellite-to-device connectivity, including widespread access to emergency services and technological innovation.
SpaceX and T-Mobile, who initiated this collaboration in 2022, aim to eliminate cellular dead zones in the US.
This follows their temporary authorization to utilize Starlink services during Hurricane Helene.
However, the FCC is still deciding if SpaceX can boost satellite radio emission power for enhanced services like voice and video calls. Competition concerns have been voiced by other carriers such as Verizon and AT&T.
FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel expressed support for increasing competition in the space economy through more partnerships between mobile carriers and satellite operators.
She envisions a future where mobile dead zones are completely eradicated.
While SpaceX has been permitted to launch thousands of satellites, decisions on further space missions and service capabilities like SMS or full voice and data services extend up to 2025. #
