Link: Sweeping Vietnam internet law comes into force

New Vietnamese internet regulations compel platforms like Facebook and TikTok to verify user identities and provide user data to the government. These rules, effective from Wednesday, are seen by many as a threat to free expression.

Decree 147 mandates tech companies in Vietnam to validate user accounts with phone numbers or Vietnamese ID numbers.

They must also record and store users' full names and birthdates.

Upon governmental request, these tech giants are obligated to hand over such data.

The decree also requires the immediate removal of any content deemed "illegal" by authorities within 24 hours.

This legislative move has sparked concerns about intensified censorship and privacy violations in Vietnam. #
