Link: TCL’s new AI short films range from bad comedy to existential horror
Earlier this year, TCL launched multiple AI-animated short films, surprising audiences despite initial criticism. Among these releases was a particularly memorable piece, 'Next Stop Paris', which featured unsettling animations and emotionless characters.
TCL wasn't deterred by the rocky reception of their first attempt; they introduced five new AI-generated shorts available on their TCLtv Plus streaming platform. Curiosity drew me in to explore whether there had been any improvement.
While these new films showed slight enhancements, they still underscored the limitations of current AI video technology. The issues went beyond the AI, impacting overall film quality.
Of the five, 'Sun Day' replicates Ray Bradbury’s tale, depicting a young girl’s struggle against bullies to witness a rare solar appearance. However, this and the other shorts suffer from jarring AI-generated sequences and lackluster voice acting.
'Project Nexus' slightly stands out with its supernatural narrative, yet it's dragged down by poor expressions and a cliffhanger ending. Others, like 'The Best Day of My Life', mix AI flashbacks and human narration to a cringeworthy effect.
The most bizarre, 'The Slug', presents a disturbing transformation of a woman into a slug, highlighting the grotesque potential of AI in storytelling. This film series not only tested the waters of AI in filmmaking but also demonstrated that technology still has a long way to go.
