Link: The first wooden satellite launched into space
Scientists have launched the world's first satellite made from wood to test its durability in space. Named LignoSat, this innovative project aims to discover if wood can withstand the extreme conditions found in orbit.
The satellite was sent into space aboard a SpaceX mission and will eventually operate about 250 miles above Earth. Over the next six months, instruments onboard will assess how wood handles the cosmic environment.
Partners from Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry began this exploration into space-suitable wood in 2020. They chose Hoonoki wood, known for its robustness and workability, after extensive testing.
Takao Doi, a guiding member of the project, sees wood as a critical resource for future space habitats. He believes that timber could enable the construction of permanent living and working spaces beyond Earth.
One significant advantage of using wood in space is its resistance to fire and decay, thanks to the absence of oxygen and water. The team is also examining how well wood can shield against space radiation.
Ultimately, if the LignoSat proves successful, the researchers aim to propose their wooden satellite technology to SpaceX. They anticipate that wooden satellites could be more environmentally friendly, avoiding the pollution caused by traditional metal satellites. #
