Link: The Internet Archive is under attack, with a breach revealing info for 31 million accounts

The Internet Archive faced a security breach and website defacement on Wednesday, confirmed by founder Brewster Kahle. A pop-up on the site humorously noted a catastrophic security breach had indeed occurred.

HIBP (Have I Been Pwned?) reported that data for 31 million email addresses from the breach was confirmed as valid. Troy Hunt of HIBP revealed that many affected accounts had previously been compromised in other breaches.

The site experienced performance issues and DDoS attacks following the breach. By evening, the Internet Archive’s services were temporarily offline, displaying only a placeholder message.

Brewster Kahle later detailed the response to the attack, stating measures taken included disabling the affected JavaScript library and enhancing security protocols. Communication about ongoing updates was promised to keep users informed.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by a user on social media platform X, hinting at potential further disruptions. Historical data shows this isn’t the first time the Internet Archive has been targeted.

Additional updates and information about the breach recovery were shared by HIBP and other outlets, emphasizing the severity and the ongoing nature of the threat. The Internet Archive continues to address and mitigate the cybersecurity challenges it faces. #
