When Ellen Kaphamtengo experienced severe abdominal pain during her ninth month of pregnancy, she hurriedly sought medical attention. A routine ultrasound at Lilongwe's Area 25 health centre, however, revealed her baby was dangerously undersized, prompting immediate medical intervention.

Birth asphyxia, a leading cause of neonatal mortality in Malawi, prompted doctors to urgently reclassify Ellen as a high-risk patient. The AI-enabled monitoring indicated the baby's heart rate was declining, signaling an urgent need for a caesarean section.

Chikondi Chiweza, the head of maternal care, acted swiftly to deliver Ellen’s baby, successfully averting a potential stillbirth.

This case highlighted the dramatic difference AI technology made, as Chiweza noted that without it, the issue might have been detected too late.

The AI system, a donation from PeriGen, monitors vital signs continuously during labour, significantly reducing stillbirths and neonatal deaths at the health centre by 82% since its implementation.

Jeffrey Wilkinson from Texas children’s hospital emphasizes the importance of the AI system, which requires fewer staff and resources, making it ideal for under-resourced hospitals.

Ellen is now a grateful mother to her son, Justice, recognizing that timely technology and medical intervention saved her baby’s life.
