Link: TikTok brings its STEM feed to all users in the US, the UK, and Ireland by default to help find educational content, after launching the feed to under-18 users (Aisha Malik/TechCrunch)
TikTok is expanding its STEM feed to all users in the US, UK, and Ireland to promote educational content. This feature, previously accessible only to those under 18, is now turned on by default for all users.
Users have the option to disable the STEM feed through the app’s settings under "content preferences."
The initiative began as a response to criticisms of TikTok's potentially addictive qualities and negative impact on teens. By promoting STEM content, TikTok aims to reshape its image and utility.
CEO Shou Chew highlighted the STEM feed’s importance during his testimonies at U.S. congressional hearings in March 2023 and January 2024.
Since its introduction, the STEM feed has achieved a significant reach. It has sparked an 18% rise in STEM-related content, amassing over 200 million views.
Future plans include expanding the feed's availability in local languages, reinforcing TikTok's commitment to educational content. #
