Link: TikTok will block beauty filters for teens over mental health concerns
TikTok is implementing age restrictions on some beauty filters to protect teenage mental health. These restrictions will apply to filters that subtly enhance appearance, while effects that are playful and obvious will remain unrestricted.
Changes will include barring users under 18 from using certain filters and clarifying what alterations each filter makes. This initiative follows a report from Internet Matters, highlighting how beautifying filters can distort young people's perception of reality.
Dr. Nikki Soo of TikTok confirmed that these restrictions will be introduced globally. The goal is to lessen the social pressure teenagers feel to conform to idealized standards online.
In response to these concerns, TikTok is also enhancing support resources in 13 European countries. Users reporting serious issues will be directed to relevant local helplines.
Additionally, TikTok is developing technology to identify and delete accounts of users under the minimum age of 13. Such accounts can be reinstated upon a successful appeal.
Christine Grahn emphasized the ongoing commitment to user safety, noting the importance of a secure environment for authentic expression on TikTok. #
