Link: United Airlines is adding free Starlink Wi-Fi to all of its planes
United Airlines is significantly upgrading its in-flight Wi-Fi across all planes using SpaceX's Starlink satellites. Scheduled to begin testing in early 2025, the service promises high-speed internet that is free for passengers.
United CEO Scott Kirby emphasizes the service's capability, stating passengers will be able to do everything at 35,000 feet that they can do on the ground. Currently, United employs four different Wi-Fi providers for its fleet.
The switch to Starlink is expected to address the common issue of slow and unreliable Wi-Fi currently experienced on flights. According to tests, Starlink can achieve speeds over 100Mbps, enabling streaming and video calls during flights.
United's commitment to installing Starlink across its fleet of over 1,000 aircraft places pressure on other airlines to enhance their Wi-Fi offerings. Notably, Starlink is already being adopted by other airlines including JSX, Hawaiian Airlines, and internationally with WestJet and Qatar Airways.
The announcement coincides with wider discussions about competitiveness in space technology, highlighted by FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel's call for more competition against SpaceX's Starlink. Musk's company has launched approximately 7,000 satellites, dominating the sector.
Meanwhile, developments in satellite communications are also occurring in the mobile sector, with T-Mobile testing emergency alerts via Starlink and leading smartphone providers integrating similar technologies. This is indicative of rapid advancements and integration of satellite services in various domains. #
