Link: VLC player demos real-time AI subtitling for videos

The VLC video player introduced a groundbreaking feature at CES 2025: automatic AI subtitling and translation performed locally and offline in real time. This feature does not rely on cloud services and is integrated directly into the VLC executable.

VideoLAN's president, Jean-Baptiste Kempf, demonstrated the feature, which utilizes open-source AI models to provide subtitles in multiple languages. Kempf emphasized the capability of the technology to translate these subtitles into over 100 languages.

The technology, originally developed as a plug-in using OpenAI's Whisper system, is now fully integrated into the VLC app. This integration allows for immediate translation of subtitles as the video plays.

There has yet to be an announcement about when this new feature will become widely available to the public. However, the potential impact on accessibility and user experience is significant.

Additionally, VideoLAN celebrated a significant milestone this week: reaching 6 billion downloads globally. Kempf highlighted that VLC's user base continues to grow despite the dominance of streaming platforms.

With CES 2025 ongoing, further insights are anticipated as we plan to observe the new AI subtitling feature firsthand on the show floor. #
