Link: VR used to stir young people's interest in fishing industry

The Japan Tuna Fisheries Cooperative Association is leveraging virtual reality (VR) at fisheries high schools to enhance recruitment. VR headsets offer students a 360-degree view of working on a tuna fishing vessel, contrasting with traditional photos and videos.

Previously, interest in tuna fishing careers among students was minimal. However, the introduction of VR has significantly increased student engagement and interest in the profession.

Feedback from a student highlighted how VR helped change their perception of the industry, noting the cooperative and safe working environment. Yet, the industry struggles with high turnover as many young fishermen leave after just a few years.

To improve retention, creating a connected environment on ships is considered essential. Currently, internet access at sea is unreliable, impacting communication.

Introduction of the Starlink satellite communication service is expected to solve these connectivity issues. More operators are considering this technology, factoring in installation costs and fees.

Pelagic longline tuna fishing is vital, supplying over 70% of the sashimi-grade tuna in Japan. Despite its importance, crew numbers have drastically fallen to just 820 this year from one-fifth of the level two decades ago. #
