Link: Women comprise 60% of attempted suicide and self-harm cases in Japan

Women made up 60% of hospitalizations for attempted suicide and self-harm in Japan from December 2022 to December 2023. The Japanese Society for Emergency Medicine reported that out of 1,987 cases, 1,254 involved women while 733 involved men.

Individuals in their 20s represented the largest demographic for these incidents. This age group was followed by those in their thirties, showcasing a troubling trend among younger adults.

The disparity was stark among the youth, with over double the number of women aged 10 to 29 affected compared to men of the same age group. However, the gender gap narrowed significantly in individuals aged 60 and above.

Both men and women were most likely to attempt suicide or self-harm between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. This time period reveals a crucial window where interventions may be most needed.

The data analyzed in this study was gathered from 44 emergency and critical care centers across Japan. Such extensive data collection helps in understanding the critical timing and demographics affected by these crises.

If you or someone you know needs help, immediate assistance is available. In Japan, call 119, or contact TELL Lifeline at 03-5774-0992 for confidential support, and check International Suicide Hotlines for resources in other countries. #
